Dear Ms. Scardina:
A shocking slaughter of dolphins takes place each year in Taiji, Japan, supported in part by the captive dolphin industry. Up to 20,000 dolphins are butchered each year while a handful are taken by the industry.
Your organization must take some responsibility. Therefore, we call on your association and all its members to formally pledge not to purchase, fund, import, or otherwise acquire any dolphins or whales caught in association with the Japanese drive fishery.
Further, we urge you to immediately cease doing any business with any individual or company providing financial, logistical, or staff assistance to the capture of dolphins and whales in Japanese drive fishery operations.
We understand that Dolphin Base is a Japanese owned brokering company for live dolphins from the drive fishery and ships them around the world. We believe they are members of your association.
Further, Active Environments/Ocean Adventures is a U.S.-owned company that purchases drive animals and sends them to aquariums in China and Philippines. We believe they are members of your association.
If Dolphin Base and Active Environments/Ocean Adventures are in fact members of your organization, we urge you to take appropriate action to restrict their inappropriate activities that do a disservice to your work.
Sincerely,
